Petrico team’s Mighty success
22 July 2021
The Petrico ‘Peaky Plodders’ aka Andrew Lamb, Rachael Turner, Chris Cullen and Alex Galbur successfully completed their mammoth hike across the Gower Peninsula on July 10 and have (so far) raised an amazing £2,200 for MacMillan Cancer Support.
Keen to point out that the hike was actually 27 miles rather than the 26 of a typical marathon, Andrew says: ” The walk was much harder than a previous hike that I had done over a similar distance, mainly because we had very challenging terrain – from sandy beaches and sand dunes to loose stone and hilly footpaths. However, we were blessed with good weather.”
Andrew adds that they even hit a bit of congestion on the Peninsula due to the sheer number of hikers taking part.
He continues: “I am really proud of how well the team did considering the temperature and terrain. Rachael’s feet were really badly affected with blisters and it was an incredibly courageous effort for her to finish. And along the way we learnt something new – that toes are also called fingers in Italian, thanks to Alex!”
The Gower Peninsula Mighty Marathon Hike was originally scheduled for summer 2020 but had to be postponed because of Covid restrictions.
Macmillan’s Mighty Hikes are a series of one-day hiking marathons across some of the most beautiful and unspoiled parts of the UK, with all sponsorship money going to Macmillan as it helps those with cancer live life as fully as possible, providing physical, financial and emotional support.
